What Are Dental IMplants?

Dental implants replace missing teeth using a Titanium implant being placed in your jaw bone to replace the root of a lost tooth. The big advantage of dental implants is that they are designed to encourage bone to grow around them so they are fixed permanently into place. The implants act as an anchor both physically and bioactively for the replacement tooth or bridge that fits on top of it.

When a tooth is lost.....

When a tooth is lost the remaining teeth either side of it are at risk of drifting out of line.This can effect the comfort of your chewing and, if allowed to continue, it may lead to other teeth becoming loose a bit like a domino effect. Having a single dental implant to stabilise the teeth either side of it helps the health of the gums and bone. What I have to do is to ensure that your implant is put in the areas where you bone is strongest. The types of bone in your upper and lower jaws are different and, if a tooth has been missing for sometime, the bone can resorb away.

Why does bone fuse with the implant?

The implant is shaped like a screw and is placed in your jaw bone. The surface of the implant is sandblasted or coated to provide as big a surface area as possible for which the bone grows around it. It is thought that oxides on the surface of Titanium encourage bone growth and it is more likely that the bone holds the implant in place through mechanical rather than chemical retention.

On top of the implants you can either have a crown or bridge that is fixed on by cement or held in place by screws. It gives us the opportunity to improve upon what you may have had before. We can improve the colour and shape of your implant crown or bridge to blend in naturally with your natural teeth so you can smile with confidence that no one but yourself will know.

What a way to see the year out! The renowned Dentistry Awards recognise industry professionals for outstanding services to their patients including the overall achievement of regional and national standards of excellence. We know it might sound a little big-headed but we were so chuffed to have been nominated for a second award in 2011 - imagine how happy we were when we won it! Frank Goulbourn, lead dentist at Bancroft Dentistry, would like to take the opportunity to thank all his team for pitching in and helping Bancroft win this coveted prize.

World Aesthetic Conference London June 2010

Attending WAC is essential if you want to remain at the forefront of the fast changing field of aesthetic dentistry.

Several team members took this unique opportunity to meet from some of the worlds leading dental experts. With respected speakers such as Corky Wilhite and Sia Mirfendereski, it’s not only their names that are memorable; we covered an array of subjects from new techniques and materials to even better communication.

We all came away with renewed enthusiasm and of course the obligatory bag of dental freebies!

1000 Miles4Hope

We would like to congratulate our patient Len Williamson and his co walker Robert Kyprianou for completing an incredible 1000 mile walk around the UK this year.

They have so far raised over £50,000 towards the hoped for £100,000 for MS research, and we are proud to support such a worthwhile cause, confident that it will help to provide hope for those with MS and make a difference in the search for a treatment.

The Beaujolais Run

Hotels.tv is our one of our neighbours in Bancroft Court and we are pleased to be sponsoring them in the annual Beaujolais run, and helping them to raise much needed funds for the charities Headway and The Richard Burns Foundation.

Text Books and Course Work

October saw both Mr Goulbourn and Mr Crawford making a significant commitment in undertaking new part time post graduate courses.

Mr Goulbourn has opted for 4 months of study in Advanced Occlusion and Treatment Planning in South London, with the highly regarded Chris Orr.

Mr Crawford has chosen to travel further from home with a yearlong Restorative course based in Harrogate and Wakefield, under the well-known expert Paul Tipton.

Neither of these subjects may appear very exciting to the average person, but to us, well, if not truly exciting, they are very interesting and ensure that we can continue to provide you the very best options possible!

The American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry Annual Conference London 2010

Gathering to learn and exchange knowledge in the rapidly evolving world of aesthetic dentistry.

Although the Americans were officially hosting this event, it was a joint collaboration with many of the premier international dental organisations in the world of cosmetic dentistry taking part. The British Academy (including our very own Mr Goulbourn) the German Academy, the European Society of Cosmetic Dentistry and not forgetting the University of Paris Study Group, all gathered to learn and exchange knowledge in the rapidly evolving world of cosmetic dentistry, techniques, technology and materials.

There continues to be an enormous amount of growth in the area of cosmetic dentistry. Patients are now much more aware of what is possible, and want to achieve their own smile transformation. We understand this, so are constantly updating our knowledge to help you achieve this.

Surgery refurbishment - final phase August 2010

The loud drilling and clouds of dust coming from our corridor is not Mr Goulbourn’s new industrial dental drill but the builders….. honest!

There has been a lot of planning and even more meetings but work is finally underway.

With a completion date of 5th November, we have a way to go but are extremely grateful to our patients who are taking all the noise and mess in their stride.

Once it is all finished we will have three fantastic surgeries, a consultation room and ahead of the governments 2011 HTM 01-05 ruling, a central sterilisation room, which will allow us to not only comply but exceed regulations.
